All Creatures Great and Small

Black Horse Hotel

Perfectly positioned in the heart of the village, the Black Horse places you right at the centre of Grassington - known to many as the fictional market town of Darrowby in the much-loved TV series All Creatures Great and Small.

Based on the classic books by James Herriot, the series is set in the late 1930s and follows the life and adventures of a young country vet in the Yorkshire Dales. Since its debut in 2020, the show has become a firm favourite with audiences in the UK and beyond, drawing millions of viewers and introducing a whole new generation to the charm of Herriot’s stories.

Filmed right here in Grassington and the surrounding Dales, the village was beautifully transformed into Darrowby for the series. Many of the buildings you’ll pass during your stay - just moments from our front door - were carefully dressed to reflect the period, with shopfronts, signage, and streets all stepping back in time to the 1930s. Today, you can still spot these familiar locations as you wander through the village, with many local businesses proudly sharing their own stories from the filming.

Fans of the series will recognise key spots such as Skeldale House, the veterinary surgery in the show, which is in fact a private house here in the village. Walking through Grassington offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of Darrowby, all while enjoying the real charm and character of this special place.

The success of the current adaptation follows in the footsteps of the original BBC series, which aired from 1978 to 1990 and remains a much-loved classic. Filming for the new series began in 2019, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the first Herriot book - making its return all the more meaningful.

Whether you’re visiting as a devoted fan of All Creatures Great and Small or simply discovering it for the first time, Grassington offers something truly memorable. And here at the Black Horse, we’re delighted to offer you a front-row seat to it all - right in the heart of Darrowby.
